AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) is the leading institute for the accounting and finance industry, providing the go-to qualifications for all finance professionals and also those aspiring to work in the industry.  

AAT regularly review their syllabus to ensure it’s in line with current industry and employment standards. As the last significant syllabus update was in 2016 (AQ2016), AAT has launched a new syllabus for all qualifications that has now come into effect (Q2022 as of 1st September 2022). 

There are a number of important changes in the Q2022 qualifications. This includes:

  • The removal of repetitive topics between levels
  • There are fewer assessments to complete per level
  • The study materials have been updated to reflect today’s accounting standards and conditions
  • Four key themes have been introduced throughout all levels; technology, communication, ethics and sustainability

What route should I study?

Before you decide on what level to study, you need to decide on the route. Bookkeeping focuses specifically on the recording and organising of financial data, whereas accounting encompasses all aspects of accounting and finance, from bookkeeping to preparing financial statements, tax reports and payroll. 

Accounting Route

Level 2 Certificate in Accounting

Most learners begin their studies with level 2. This is an introductory level, providing those with no prior knowledge or experience a foundation of knowledge within the sector. When you have completed this level, you will be able to move into job roles such as Accounts Assistant, Accounts Payable Clerk and Trainee Accountant.

Level 3 Diploma in Accounting

If you have already completed level 2, or have experience working in an accounting role, you could consider going straight onto the level 3 qualification. When you have completed this level you will be able to progress into roles such as Assistant Accountant, Finance Officer and Accounts Supervisor.

Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting

If you have already completed level 2 and level 3, or have extensive experience in accounting practice, you could consider studying the level 4 qualification. When you have completed this level you will be able to progress into roles such as Finance Manager, Senior/Chartered Accountant and Finance Analyst. 

Bookkeeping Route

Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping 

This level is suitable for those with an interest in bookkeeping and looking to gain some further insights with an introductory course. When you have completed this qualification, you will be able to move into job roles such as Trainee Bookkeeper and Accounts Administrator.

Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping

Most learners begin their studies with level 2. This is the full introductory level, providing those with no prior experience a foundation of knowledge within the sector. When you have completed this level, you will be able to move into job roles such as Trainee Bookkeeper, Accounts Clerk and Finance Assistant.

Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping

If you have already completed level 2, or have experience working in a bookkeeping role, you could consider going straight onto the level 3 qualification. When you have completed this level you will be able to progress into roles such as Bookkeeper, Senior Bookkeeper and Assistant Accountant.
