Whether it’s a promotion at work, a career change, or mastering a current role, success looks different for everyone. However, it can be difficult to work towards our long-term goals and to be successful when we have so many responsibilities on a day-to-day basis that don’t necessarily align with our aspirations.

74% of employees feel that they are not reaching their full potential in their careers, which also translates to a general feeling of being unsuccessful. For the 26% of employees that feel they are successful, what is it that they do so differently? There are 5 key things that successful people do:

  1. Lifelong learning
  2. Have an action plan
  3. Routine
  4. Positive attitude
  5. Long-term viewpoint

Lifelong Learning

A lot of people stop learning after they have completed mainstream education and have entered the working world. However, successful people never stop learning. They continue their studies all through their working careers to develop their skills and knowledge and to prepare them for their next progression. Being a lifelong learner makes you the most qualified person for your job, which is turn makes you a highly valued employee and desirable to other businesses.

There are many professional qualifications that are designed to support people looking to develop their careers. You can view our range here.

Have an Action Plan

To work towards success you must know what it is you mean by success, why you want to reach that particular goal, and how you are going to do it. Creating an action plan brings your success from your thoughts into reality, which means you’re more likely to follow it. To create an action plan, you need to:

  • Define your goal
  • Determine the tasks you need to complete to reach that goal
  • Delegate tasks
  • Set deadlines
  • Determine any resources you need

Routine

Successful people have an effective routine in place. Their routine will set them up to complete their daily tasks, meet deadlines and learn in an easy-to-follow format that will keep them productive every day and manage their time effectively. Successful people don’t work 24/7, they schedule breaks during their working day and make the most of their time off so that when they are working, they are as productive as possible.

Positive Attitude

Successful people tend to have a glass half full mentality. Although this doesn’t necessarily make them better at their jobs, it helps them cope with situations better and learn from their mistakes. Having a positive outlook reduces the amount of time spent worrying, creating more time for personal growth and development.

Long-term Viewpoint

Successful people have a long-term viewpoint. This makes it easier for them to feel motivated and put in the hours to complete challenging tasks. Having a long-term perspective is the best way to align your daily tasks with your end goal and ensure that you are working towards success every day.

DLC Training will help you succeed

When you start to incorporate these 5 things into your day, you’ll be well on your way to achieving all your goals. One of our very successful students, Abi Sutton, completed two levels of CMI with us while working full-time and has continued to progress in her career by achieving these qualifications. When asked about how she found getting back into learning, she said:

It was difficult for sure, getting back into the groove of learning was tough and the fact that it was during the pandemic when my productivity was at its lowest, didn’t help! But once I’d started it was good. The courses challenged me and they were mentally stimulating, which really helped with retaining the knowledge.

The hardest part is always the first step. Here at DLC Training, we have a team of people ready to help you take that first step toward success. For advice on our training courses and achieve your career goals, contact our team today.
