Worcestershire County Council’s buyers are using the council’s spending power to boost their local economy – by including clauses in contracts to increase training and job opportunities in the area.

The council’s purchasing department have announced a new plan to ensure that the council’s spending offers the maximum benefit to the local area, while still adhering to EU purchasing regulations.

Under the new plans, council suppliers will be required by clauses added to contracts and tender documents to add value to their community by tackling unemployment and offering training opportunities such as apprenticeships. The initiative is designed to create new opportunities for vulnerable groups in Worcestershire, including the long-term unemployed and those with disabilities.

Michael Howard, the council’s strategic procurement manager, said: “Worcestershire County Council procures the services of thousands of businesses each year from small local firms to major organisations. It is really important then that wherever possible, we use our status as a buyer to best effect by increasing jobs, skills and training opportunities.”
